Assignment Description: Choose a prompt from the list on the reverse side of this page and respond in a 750 to 1,250 words.

You must include:
A thesis statement that follows the format of the handouts you were given in class.
o   The thesis must have: a hypothesis, reasoning, evidence, and a restatement of the prompt
Support for your thesis taken directly from the text.
o   Include at LEAST THREE quotations from the story or stories.
o   Include at LEAST TWO paraphrases or summaries from the story or stories.
A conclusion that summarizes your thesis and leaves the reader with an additional “so what?” observation.

You should also consider:
The specifications on the rubric that accompanies this handout.
Your audience and purpose.
The editing checklist sheet that accompanies this handout.

Option 1: Choose two of the stories above and compare and contrast the effect produced by irony. Which makes better use of irony in conveying the overall theme?

Option 2: Choose a story marked with an asterisk. Watch the approved short film based on that story. What are the differences in the plot, characterization, and complexities between the two? Which is more effective in conveying the theme?

Option 3: Choose a story in which symbolism plays a key role in establishing theme and effect. Conduct an in-depth analysis of the major symbols and what they mean.

Option 4: Choose two stories that present varying ideas about relationships. How are the characters used to establish the writer’s ideas about relationships? Which is more effective and why?

Option 5: Choose a story in which the ending does not conform to Poe’s theory about story endings (i.e. the idea that endings should be both shocking and inevitable). Why does this ending work?

Option 6: Choose another topic that interests you in one of the stories and analyze and element of your choice to form an interpretation.
